Prayers for Those in Oklahoma & Missouri

My #1 favorite Christmas movie is.......

"Its A Wonderful Life" (1946)
Starring: James Stewart and Donna Reed

George: What is it you want, Mary? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That's a pretty good idea. I'll give you the moon, Mary.
Mary: I'll take it. Then what?
George: Well, then you could swallow it, and it'd all dissolve, see? And the moonbeams'd shoot out of your fingers and your toes, and the ends of your hair... Am I talking too much?

"Clarence! Clarence! Help me, Clarence. Get me back. Get me back. I don't care what happens to me. Only get me back to my wife and kids. Help me, Clarence, please. Please! I want to live again. I want to live again. I want to live again.....Please, God, let me live again."

Trivia for it's a Wonderful Life;

  • Films made prior to this one used cornflakes painted white for the falling snow effect. Because the cornflakes were so loud, dialogue had to be dubbed in later. Frank Capra wanted to record the sound live, so a new snow effect was developed using foamite (a fire-fighting chemical) and soap and water. This mixture was then pumped at high pressure through a wind machine to create the silent, falling snow. 6000 gallons of the new snow were used in the film. The RKO Effects Department received a special award from the Motion Picture Academy for the development of the new film snow.

  • As Uncle Billy is leaving George's house drunk, it sounds as if he stumbles over some trash cans on the sidewalk. In fact, a crew member dropped some equipment right after Uncle Billy left the screen. Both actors continued with the scene ("I'm all right, I'm all right!") and director Frank Capra decided to use it in the final cut. He gave the clumsy stagehand a $10 bonus for "improving the sound."

  • James Stewart was nervous about the phone scene kiss because it was his first screen kiss since his return to Hollywood after the war. Under Frank Capra's watchful eye, Stewart filmed the scene in only one unrehearsed take, and it worked so well that part of the embrace was cut because it was too passionate to pass the censors.

  • The movie drew fierce criticism for its political statements about post-WWII society when it was released in 1946. Even the FBI labeled it a "subversive" movie and charged that its use of a nasty, Scrooge-like businessman "was a common trick used by communists".

Capra noted several times that he had received more mail about this point than anything else in the film.

  • The set for Bedford Falls was constructed in two months and was one of the longest sets that had ever been made for an American movie. It covered four acres of the RKO's Encino Ranch. It included 75 stores and buildings, main street, factory district and a large residential and slum area. The Main Street was 300 yards long, three whole city blocks!

  • While filming the scene where George prays in the bar, James Stewart has said that he was so overcome that he began to sob right then and there. Later, Frank Capra reframed the shot so it looked like a much closer shot than was actually filmed because he wanted to catch that expression on Stewart's face.

  • The scene on the bridge where Clarence saves George was filmed on a back lot on a day where the temperature was 90 degrees Fahrenheit. This is why James Stewart is visibly sweating in a few scenes.

FYI...

If you live in San Diego, take a look around and you will see this all over the county!

Toyon or Christmas Berry

Toyon, or "Christmas-berry," one of the more distinctive shrubs of Southern California's native chaparral plant community, has begun to flaunt clusters of red berries. Here in coastal San Diego, toyon can be found wherever large patches of native vegetation survive, but especially in the thick chaparral covering some north-facing slopes. Toyon branches may look inviting to cut as a Christmas wreath -- but don't cut them, they're protected by California state law.

I had a great weekend! On Friday C. and I, along with Candy and Manny went to Balboa Park December Nights. Despite the rain we had a wonderful time!

The park with all its sparkling lights was absolutely beautiful! (I forgot my camera, darn it!) There was theatrical and music entertainment and exotic food and spirits throughout the park. All the museums were open free to the public and a display called "My Ancestor's Village" that shared the culture of San Diego's Native American community was not only educational but beautiful to look at.

Best of all...I got my first kiss under the mistletoe for the Christmas season! It was really romantic and the kiss made my knees melt ;o)

*****

The San Diego Chargers won against the Titans 23-17 Wahoo!

****

Oklahoma utilities said some 400,000 customers were blacked out as power lines snapped under the weight of ice and falling tree branches, and utilities in Missouri said more than 100,000 homes and business had no power there. Roughly 11,000 were blacked out in southern Illinois.

I can not imagine what it is like to deal with a ice storm or a snow storm because I have never experienced either of them. Yes I know I have led a sheltered life! I am keeping all of my readers in Oklahoma and Missouri (there are a lot of you) in my thoughts and prayers. I hope all of you are alive, safe and warm {{{hugs}}}

In a rare crime, someone recently slaughtered four dolphins off the North County coast, federal authorities announced yesterday.
The long-beaked common dolphins washed ashore between May 29 and June 5 at locations between Carlsbad State Beach and Oceanside Harbor. All had most likely been shot in the head by a small-caliber weapon, authorities said. Read more here..

Rainman will be an official volunteer at this years annual San Diego Comic Con 2007. In order to do so he had to have an 'Official Resident Evil Costume' that could only be purchase from Singapore. I told him that he must pay for the costume with his own money ($178.00). Finally after months of saving it arrived by mail on Friday! I have never seen him so happy!

My Saturday late, late night movie...
Starring
Jayne Mansfield, Marie McDonald, Tommy Noonan, Mickey Hargitay, Fritz Feld

Wardrobe Malfunctions
scanned from personal photo
Jayne Mansfield and Sophia Loren at Romanoff's in Beverly Hills

In April 1957, her bosom was the feature of a notorious publicity stunt intended to deflect attention from Sophia Loren during a dinner party in the Italian star's honor. Photographs of the encounter were published around the world. The most famous image showed Loren raising a contemptuous eyebrow at the American actress, who was standing between Loren and her dinner companion, Clifton Webb, leaned over the table and allowed her breasts to spill over her low neckline and expose one nipple.

“ Jayne Mansfield is making a career of being a girl. ”
—Walter Winchell, reporter

“ I don't know why you people [the press] like to compare me to Marilyn or that girl, what's her name, Kim Novak. Cleavage, of course, helped me a lot to get where I am. I don't know how they got there. ”
—Jayne Mansfield

“ I need to have a man around. I have to sleep with a man every night. I really do. ”

Robert Mitchum, Faith Domrtque, Claude Rains

Margo (Faith Domergue) is the wife of Frederick Lannington (Claude Rains), an apparently sadistic elderly millionaire. Jeff Cameron (Robert Mitchum) is a man who falls in love with Margo when she was brought into a hospital after attempting suicide. He becomes romantically involved with her without knowing that she's married.

"Nobody pities me!" Margo Lannington

Faith Domerque wrote My Life With Howard Huges in 1972.

Dave Kehr writing for the Chicago Reader notes "Director John Farrow nicely hits the nightmarish, hallucinatory qualities in this standard film noir plot: Mitchum spends the last half of the film barreling down the dirt roads of southern California with a brain concussion, passing out periodically and waking up surrounded by some of the bleakest scenery America has to offer."
**********
What a beautiful weekend here in San Diego! I spent most of my time in the sand at the beach. Watching all the Southern California gods and goddesses swim, surf, skateboard, play volleyball and build sand castles in the sand, it really does not get better than that! ;0)
The highlight of my weekend was a fifteen minute phone call with my girl, Jules over at the Theater of the Absurd. Hang in there sweetie, Big Ernie and time are on your side. Love ya!
I have a very busy day ahead of me, have a great week everyone!

Monday's Glamour

It Happened One Night

Awards;

Best Picture - Columbia Pictures (Harry Cohn, producer)
Best Actor in a Leading Role - Clark Gable
Best Actress in a Leading Role - Claudette Colbert
Best Director - Frank Capra
Best Writing, Adaptation
- Robert Riskin
This movie has also been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Ellie: There is a brain behind that face of yours, isn't there? You've got everything nicely figured out for yourself.

Ellie: You think I'm a fool and a spoiled brat. Well, perhaps I am, although I don't see how I can be. People who are spoiled are accustomed to having their own way. I never have. On the contrary. I've always been told what to do, and how to do it, and when, and with whom. Would you believe it? This is the first time I've ever been alone with a man!...It's a wonder I'm not panic-stricken...Nurses, governesses, chaperones, even bodyguards. Oh, it's been a lot of fun.

Ellie: "Listen, if you promise not to do it, I'll pay you. I'll pay you as much as he will. You won't gain anything by giving me away, as long I'm willing to make it worth your while. I've got to get to New York without being stopped. It's terribly important to me."

Peter: You know, I had you pegged right from the jump. Just a spoiled brat of a rich father. The only way you get anything is to buy it, isn't it? You're in a jam and all you can think of is your money. It never failed, did it? Ever hear of the word humility? No, you wouldn't. I guess it would never occur to you to just say, 'Please mister, I'm in trouble, will you help me?' No, that would bring you down off your high horse for a minute. Well, let me tell you something, maybe it will take a load off your mind. You don't have to worry about me. I'm not interested in your money or your problem. You, King Westley, your father. You're all a lot of hooey to me!

Peter hangs a blanket between the twin beds in their rented room

Ellie: That, I suppose, makes everything quite all right?

Peter: Oh this? Well, I like privacy when I retire. Yes, I'm very delicate in that respect. Prying eyes annoy me. Behold the walls of Jericho! Uh, maybe not as thick as the ones that Joshua blew down with his trumpet, but a lot safer. You see, uh, I have no trumpet. Now just to show you my heart's in the right place, I'll give you my best pair of pajamas

Peter offers Ellie his pajamas - she ignores them - so he tosses them at her

Dang, Clark Gable looks good doesn't he? I would have jumped his bones at this point!

Peter: You don't want to join the Israelites? Alright.

Peter: Perhaps you're interested in how a man undresses. You know, it's a funny thing about that. Quite a study in psychology. No two men do it alike. You know, I once knew a man who kept his hat on until he was completely undressed. Yeah, now he made a picture. Years later, his secret came out. He wore a toupee. Yeah. You know, I have a method all my own. If you notice, the coat came first, then the tie, then the shirt. Now, uh, according to Hoyle, after that, the, uh, pants should be next. There's where I'm different... I go for the shoes next. First the right, then the left. After that it's, uh, every man for himself.

Claudett Colbert had a great pair of legs!

Ellie: What do you say we're supposed to be doing?
Peter: Hitchhiking.
Ellie: Oh. Well, you've given me a very good example of the hiking. Where does the hitching come in?
Peter: A little early yet. No cars out.
Ellie: If it's just the same to you, I'm going to sit right here and wait til they come.

Ellie: [on Peter's hitchiking skills] There's no end to your accomplishments, is there?
Peter: It's all in that ol' thumb, see?...that ol' thumb never fails. It's all a matter of how you do it, though. Now, you take number one, for instance. That's a short, jerky movement like this - that shows independence, you don't care whether they stop or not. You've got money in your pocket, see...
Ellie: Clever!
Peter: But number two, that's a little wider movement - a smile goes with this one, like this, that means you've got a brand new story about the farmer's daughter...
Ellie: Hmm, mmm. You figured that out all by yourself!
Peter: Number three, that's the pits. Yeah, that's a pitiful one you know. When you're broke and hungry and everything looks black. It's a long sweeping movement like this, but you've got to follow through though...
Ellie: Oh, that's amazing.
Peter: It's no good though, if you haven't got a long face to go with it. Keep your eye on that thumb, baby, and see what happens. [a car drives by without stopping]
Ellie: I still got my eye on the thumb.
Peter: Something must have gone wrong. I'll try method number two.
Ellie: When you get to 100, wake me up.
Peter: [after failing to get over a dozen cars to stop] I don't think I'll write that book after all.
Ellie: Let me try.
Peter: You? Don't make me laugh.
Ellie: Oh, you're such a smart alec. Nobody knows anything but you. I'll stop a car and I won't use my thumb.
Peter: What're you going to do?
Ellie: It's a system all my own.

She pulls her skirt above her knee and the next car screeches to a halt.

*******

I watched this movie early Friday afternoon and if by chance you have not seen it, you really should. Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable are funny and really easy on the eyes if you know what I mean. ;0)

All I wanted to do this weekend was stay in bed under the covers however a couple of friends had different plans in store for me. I am lucky to have such wonderful friends in my life...including those of you out there in the blogosphere. I love each of you and again thank you for all of your support.

The Ten Commandments

Starring

Yul Brynner as Pharaoh Rameses II

Anne Baxter as Nefretiri

Movie Quotes;

Nefretiri: "You need have no fear of me."

Nefretiri: "You have been able to erase it?"

Sephora: "He has forgotten both of us. You lost him when he went to seek his god. I lost him when he found his god."

Yvonne de Carlo
She was one sexy woman!

Facts;

Yvonne was with Universal Studios under contract (1945-50) She was also with Paramount Pictures under contract (1941-45)

Yvonne de Carlo has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the first being at 6124 Hollywood Blvd for motion pictures. The second one at 6715 Hollywood Blvd for television.

Also she won a beauty contest in 1938, Yvonne was crowned Miss Venice Beach.

She also had many famous boyfriends, including
Burt Lancaster, Howard Hughes, Robert Stack, Robert Taylor, Billy Wilder and Aly Khan

Yul Brynner

He always looked good without a shirt on!

She was a Paramount starlet, but the studio apparently signed her mainly for her slight resemblance to Dorothy Lamour, as it was common then for studios to sign look alike in order to remind the stars in question that they easily could be replaced should their behavior become difficult or their box-office appeal begin to wane.

Yvonne de Carlo
as

The Munsters T.V Triva;

George Barris built two automobiles for the show: "The Munster Koach", a hot rod built on a lengthened 1923 Ford Model T chassis with a custom hearse body, and Dragula (which inspired a Rob Zombie song by the same name), which was a drag car built from a coffin, which Grandpa used to win back "The Munster Koach" after Herman lost it in a race. (According to Barris, a real coffin was, in fact, purchased for the car.) In real life Yvonne de Carlo drove a Jaguar sedan fitted with custom-made "spooky" ornaments, for example spider webs on the rims. She had to give up on it, as the car was repeatedly vandalized by "fans" hunting for souvenirs.

Herman and Lily Munster are often mistakenly offered as the first television couple to share the same bed. "The Munsters" showed Herman and Lily first sharing a bed in the episode "Autumn Croakus" on November 26, 1964. But, in reality, "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" showed Ozzie and Harriet Nelson together in their queen-size bed many times in the 1952-1966 series. Still, the first-couple-in-same-bed award goes to a 1947 appearance by "Mary Kay and Johnny" in their episode of November 18, 1947 on the Dumont network.

The Munster's Victorian home is also the home of Gabrielle and Carlos Solis in ABC's Desperate Housewives.

With the passing of Yvonne DeCarlo on January 8 2007, Butch Patrick (Eddie), Beverley Owen (Marilyn), and Pat Priest (Marilyn) are now the three remaining living members of the original program's main cast.

I loved watching the Munsters on T.V! Given the chance I would purchase the T.V DVD set.
I wonder, is it even available?

I hope you had a good weekend, I know I did! ;0)

Alfred Hitchcocks
"dial M for Murder"
Starring
Ray Milland, Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings

Memorable Quotes from Dial M for Murder (1954)

Tony Wendice: People don't commit murder on credit.
Tony Wendice:
Do you really believe in the perfect murder?
Tony Wendice:
How do you go about writing a detective story?
Mark Halliday: Well, you forget detection and concentrate on crime. Crime's the thing. And then you imagine you're going to steal something or murder somebody.
Tony Wendice: Oh, is that how you do it? It's interesting.
Mark Halliday: Yes, I usually put myself in the criminal's shoes and then I keep asking myself, uh, what do I do next?
Margot Mary Wendice: Do you really believe in the perfect murder?
Mark Halliday: Mmm, yes, absolutely. On paper, that is. And I think I could, uh, plan one better than most people; but I doubt if I could carry it out.
Tony Wendice: Oh? Why not?
Mark Halliday: Well, because in stories things usually turn out the way the author wants them to; and in real life they don't... always.
Tony Wendice: Hmm.
Tony Wendice: No, I'm afraid my murders would be something like my bridge: I'd make some stupid mistake and never realize it until I found everybody was looking at me.
I have watched this movie at least six times in my lifetime. I love all of Alfred Hitchcocks movies!

Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings

Robert Cummings Trivia;

Cummings began a long career on television in 1952 with the comedy My Hero. He was in the first performance of Twelve Angry Men to be televised, a live production that aired in 1955, and received an Emmy award for his role as "Juror Number Eight".

From 1955 through 1959, Cummings starred in the celebrated sitcom, The Bob Cummings Show (shown in reruns as Love That Bob), later followed by The New Bob Cummings Show, 1961–1962. He also spent a season starring in My Living Doll (1964), another sitcom. His last significant credit was the 1973 TV movie Partners in Crime, also starring Lee Grant.

Cummings married five times and sired seven children. He was a staunch advocate of natural foods and a healthy diet and authored the book Stay Young and Vital (1960) on health foods and exercise.

Grace Kelly and Ray Milland

Ray Milland Trivia:

Gave the shortest acceptance speech of any Oscar winner: he simply bowed and left the stage.

The popular hard rock band Local H recorded a song entitled "Ray Miland" (whether or not the actor's name is misspelled intentionally is unclear) as a b-side to their album "As Good as Dead." The song's lyrics describe a person experiencing moments of clarity in what seems to be an alcoholic haze.

Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly Trivia;

She was the first actress to appear on a postage stamp. (Source: The Book of Useless Information, 2002)

Grace Kelly is mentioned in Billy Joel's history themed song "We Didn't Start the Fire" ("Princess Grace").

The French haute couture fashion house Hermès named one of its most famous, and now most sought-after, products for Grace Kelly—the "Kelly Bag." Waiting lists of up to two years are not unusual for this handbag, and prices start at $5000 for the small version in plain leather and soar over $50,000 for crocodile skin or other unusual materials. The late Diana, Princess of Wales had to wait for almost a year to get an ostrich skin version of one.

The classic head-cover of a silk scarf crossed under the chin and knotted at the side or nape of the neck is universally known as the "Grace Kelly". This chic look is still copied by many female Hollywood stars when they wish to retain a degree of anonymity in the public eye. Famous users include: Sharon Stone, Madonna, and Annette Bening.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be Grace Kelly! She was so beautiful, I suppose that it is nearly every girls dream to one day be a "real life" Princess. Maybe someday my Prince will come..

Have a great day everyone!

"It's A Wonderful Life" Myths and Rumors

It is also often quoted that psychiatrists would recommend It's a Wonderful Life to patients suffering from depression. This was because it was such a well known feel-good movie, and it generated positive results. However, contemporary psychiatrists would probably scoff at this idea; in the Special Edition video, this theory is quoted.

Another rumor is that Pink Floyd album Wish You Were Here can be played alongside the film with key events in the movie tying in with song lyrics. The similarities are said to be more noticeable than in the other claimed Pink Floyd movie sync with The Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon.

Movie Trivia

The Motion Picture Association of America's strict production code in 1946 censored such phrases and words as "nuts to you", "impotent", "dang", "lousy", and "jerk". But Capra managed to bypass the production code stipulating that criminals be punished for their crime: Potter never met justice for stealing the $8,000. Capra noted several times that he had received more mail about this point than anything else in the film.

After Uncle Billy chooses between his three wavering hats and leaves George's house drunk, it sounds as if he is falling over trash cans. This scene was unplanned. A technician accidentally dropped some equipment off-set, making a loud noise. Shouting "I'm all right, I'm all right," the actor saved the take and made comedic history. The stagehand made an extra $10.

In one scene, during a run on the bank, George must persuade Bailey Building & Loan depositors not to demand the return of their deposits. This scene takes place about 1932 or 1933, just before the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation were created to prevent such financial catastrophes.

This weekend was wonderful, and full of holiday fun. Rainman and I served meals to the homeless and as always, it truly is a humbling experience. It is really hard not to take home each and every child that is currently living on the streets of San Diego. My family is truly blessed. We have a roof over our heads, food, clothing, toothpaste, medicines, hair brushes and toilet paper all within arms reach.
We also went to church, listened to a wonderful choir and watched a children's play based on The Nativity. After that, we went to The Old Globe Theater to see Dr.Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and the performance was wonderful!
I finally finished decorating the tree. Yay me! Also I made more fudge, five different kinds of cookies and two apple pies for a Christmas Party. (Angel in case you are wondering, no I did not even taste any of the yummy smelling food! ;0)

Ann Margret

Elivs Presley

Ann Margret is the most beautiful redhead I have ever seen. And in my humble opinion most modern actresses can't hold a candle to her.

Elivs Presley was very sexy in his pre drug days. After the drugs...not so much.

The movie, Viva Las Vegas starring Ann Margret and Elivis Presley, was the first to actually show the main star of a major movie musical manovering through an entire song, in one single and uncut take, and was shot by the lens of a single camera.

Well I hope this brings a Monday morning smile to you, Geoffe!

Lauren Bacall (Slim/Marie Browning): "Who was the girl?"
Humphrey Bogart (Harry Morgan/Steve): "What girl?"
Lauren Bacall Slim: "The one who gave you such a high opinion of women."
Lauren Bacall Slim: "You know Steve, you're not so hard to figure. I know what you're going to say some of the time. Most of the time. The rest of the time ... the rest of the time you're just a stinker. "
Lauren Bacall Slim: (after kissing Steve) "It's even better when you help."
Lauren Bacall Slim: "You don't have to act with me, Steve. You don't have to say anything and you don't have to do anything. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and... blow. "

This is the movie where a 19 year old Lauren Bacall attracts the 44 year old Humphrey Bogart. Thus began one of the great Hollywood love stories of all time. In 1945 Lauren Bacall became Bogart's 4th wife. Bogart's coffin contains a small, gold whistle, put there by Bacall. Lauren Bacall has two children, Leslie and Stephen by Bogart. Leslie's name was chosen by Bogie to honor Leslie Howard, who got him his first break in Petrified Forest. Actor Sam Robarts is her son from her marriage to Jason Robarts, whom she married after Bogart's death.

Anyone know the name of this movie? I hope everyone has a good week, that is all for now.
